Lets talk green cleaning…..

green gloveI walked into a bathroom the other day, and my breath was literally taken away by the toxic smell of bleach. Now I get why people use bleach; they think its the only way to get things hygienic and clean – but seriously, does there need to be so much used that I cannot breathe whilst using their toilet, and why aren’t they considering the environment? Cut to me feeling dizzy and gasping for clean air as I exit…… I’m pretty sure other people used to think just like this when using my own bathroom at home! So my apologies if I fumigated anyone in the past…..

Since 2015 my family and I became a low tox home, using natural options as much as we can. (well mostly me; as I am the one who cleans; lets be serious here…..)

Now I am not ignorant – you cannot eliminate all chemicals from your home and life – its not possible (unless you consider becoming Amish?) and so we started making our own cleaning products. We also make our own bath and beauty products too – because you don’t even want to know what’s going in your body with store bought stuff – but that’s for another post……

I hope you like making this change as much as we have. Since using Nature in place of harsh synthetic chemicals in our home, we have been so much healthier. Our skin is clearer, we have less instances of ill health and our house smells AMAZING!

Essential Oils and Modern Medicine

generic oil

Its so exciting to see medical practitioners and hospitals involving nature in their healthcare solutions and considering a holistic approach for their patients. More of them need to consider this approach as the world makes a significant turn towards natural healing options.

My family has incorporated essential oils and natural products into our daily routine and noticed significant improvements both physically and emotionally. Our occurrence of illness (colds, simple viruses, and emotional upsets) have reduced and our overall wellness continues to improve.

Dr. Brannick Riggs has been practicing medicine for 13 years. In 2001, he graduated from the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson while receiving some of his training in complementary and alternative medicine. He specializes in family medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He currently practices in Utah and enjoys using the oils in his home and integrating them into his practice to bless the lives of his patients. Dr. Riggs is partnering with doTERRA in an effort to provide volunteer service with essential oils and hospice. – See more here

DIY Low Tox Dishwashing Tablets

tabs 1

I don’t know about you, but I get seriously frustrated with all the toxins, rubbish fillers and chemicals that commercial brands have in their dishwashing options. If you stop and think about what we are constantly washing our dishes and kitchen utensils in – you’ll feel the same. But you don’t have to worry about creating or searching for a ‘green’ alternative – I have created a recipe for you.

I have hunted around. I have tried and tested. There are seriously so many ways to make these – and you just need to find what works for you. I have found my favourite after several tweaks. Will it be your favourite too?

Its a very simple recipe, even my 8 year old can make them – so I have absolute faith in you! I choose to add in my very favourite essential oils for a beautiful fresh smell. If you’d like to know more about my choice in EO’s, or to grab some for yourself; click here.

Are you ready to get your hands ‘dirty’? (pardon the pun, but you know what I mean)

This recipe is one from my ‘Green Cleaning’ Ebook.

dishwasher tabs

Dishwasher Tablets

Makes 24 tablets

50g salt (or rock salt milled to powder)

150g washing soda

125g citric acid

100g borax

35 drops citrus bliss essential oil (or lemon, orange, lime, tea tree, eucalyptus etc)

1 T OnGuard cleaning concentrate (optional, alternatively use 1/2 T water)

Silicone ice cube or mini-muffin tray

1.      Combine all dry ingredients together in a large bowl, stirring with a spoon, ensuring all lumps are removed and well combined – try not to ‘dust up’ the mixture.

2.      Add in essential oil, then add in OnGuard concentrate. Blend well.

3.      Using a tablespoon/dessertspoon, scoop mixture into a silicone mini muffin tray, and pack in firmly with back of spoon.

4.      Leave the mix to set and harden in a cool place for 1-2 days. Mixture needs to be quite firm and dry to touch.

5.      Gently turn the tray upside down over a tea towel or cutting board  and tap lightly so tablets fall out. Don’t waste those crumbs; Use them in your next wash!

6.      Store in a glass jar, or airtight container under the sink.

7.      Use one tablet per wash – in the dispenser or just pop it on the bottom of the dishwasher. You can use White vinegar in the rinse cycle as a rinse aid solution.

And you’re done!!! I love the smell of these tablets, and am impressed that I can also use white vinegar in the rinse cycle to help the glasses and cutlery keep their shine – sometimes I have a few water marks left on my glassware; but I’m much more comfortable with that knowing there aren’t any harmful chemicals on the dishes anymore.

Now get creating; all the ingredients can be found in your local supermarket in the laundry or dishwashing aisles. Enjoy!
